Bering is a relatively new watch brand that does not have a rich and illustrious history. The brand was made after the founders were inspired by the beauty and simplicity of the arctic. This makes sense as Bering watches are typically numberless and use very plain dials, cases, and bracelets. The entire range has a distinct minimalist style to it and is never loud, oversized, or garish.
The name Bering comes from the Danish explorer Vitus Bering who was the first European to discover Alaska. Even today, the strip of water the separates Alaska from Russia is known as the Bering Strait.
If you were to compare Bering to other watch brands, it is somewhat similar to both MVMT & Skagen. Like Skagen, the brand has a minimalist Scandinavian design with similar case shapes and bracelet designs. Also like Skagen, Bering offers both mens and women’s watches but seems to be more masculine when directly compared.
Perhaps the most clever point about the brand is its innovative use of packaging. Instead of providing you with a cardboard box to throw away. Each watch comes inside a glass cylinder which can be turned into a storage jar or candle holder.

Is Bering A Luxury Watch Brand?
Bering is certainly not a luxury watch brand. Firstly their watches cost in the region of $100-300. Whilst there are cheaper brands on the market, if any American can afford this style of watch, it is not luxury.
Secondly, the brand does not have a rich and developed watchmaking history compared to other brands. If you think of companies such as Rolex, Patek Philippe or even Tag Heuer. The history is simply not there for Bering, they are not comparable to even the lowest level luxury watch brands.
Lastly, the materials and movements cannot be compared to Swiss, or even high-end Japanese watches. Brands such as Grand Seiko, Tudor, or even Raymond Weil use far superior movements. You have 0 chance of finding anything other than a Miyota inside a Bering watch. There is nothing wrong with this movement, but it can hardly be compared with a Valjoux 7750.
Where Are Bering Watches Made?
Bering watches are assembled in China. Although the company is headquartered in Denmark, watches are made in China – using Japanese (Miyota quartz) movements. This is quite normal for other fashion brands such as Fossil, Tommy Hilfiger, Skagen & Michael Kors. All of which outsource their production to the far east.
It is quite clear that the company has a minimalist Scandinavian design and philosophy throughout.
Are Bering Watches Waterproof?
Yes. Water-resistance will depend on which type of model you are buying. Depending on the design, some Bering watches are much more water-resistant than others. Overall, you will not need to worry about wearing a Bering watch whilst washing your hands or being caught in a rainstorm. It will be able to handle this amount of water with ease.
Are Bering Watches Good Value For Money?
Bering watches are pretty good value for money. Being fair to the brand, they have their own unique and minimalist style which they do not deviate from. The best selling point of the brand is that sapphire crystal is used to protect the dial of the watch. Whilst this is standard procedure at the higher end of watchmaking. Fashion brands often do not want to spend this money on glass, so instead use a mineral crystal. This is not the main selling point of Bering but is at least one area they excel compared with competitors.
When comparing the movement of the watch with other brands of a similar price point, they are pretty much all the same. You will find Miyota being used in brands such as Hugo Boss, Coach, Tommy Hilfiger, and Skagen. All of these watches sell for around the same amount of money, so you can’t really say one is of better value than the other.
Bering watches are well made and use 316L steel. Again, this is somewhat industry standard, although some brands will skimp on case materials to save money. Bering usually has good quality control and finishing standards to their watch cases and straps.
The Best Bering Watches
Steel
This multi-dial watch has quite an unusual design. Instead of the hour indicators placed around the outside of the dial, they are instead placed around the edge of the bezel, which is split into two color sections, black and blue.
The subdials show 24 hour time, day of the week, and date of the month. These can be changed by either winding time forwards in a normal fashion. Or by pulling the crown outwards 1 click and adjusting the date in this way.
Titanium
If you are after a lightweight and minimalist fashion watch, this Bering titanium model could be exactly what you’re looking for. The dial is one of the more busy variations that the brand offers, although it is still relatively minimalist when compared with other brands.
Titanium is durable, light, and hypoallergenic, so it is an ideal material for a wristwatch. Generally speaking, you will pay considerably more for a titanium watch than a stainless steel model. Although with Bering, this watch is no more expensive than any other model they sell. So if you particularly wanted a titanium watch, this is really good value for money.
Solar
The Bering solar watch uses similar technology to both Seiko solar and Citizen eco-drive watches. This is ideal if you want to use the watch for many years and cannot be bothered to get the battery changed – as you won’t need to do this. Bering claims that this watch lasts for 6-12 months on a full charge with no light. Whilst I am a bit skeptical of this claim, if you’re wearing a watch it will be getting light every day, so this doesn’t really matter.
It has a smartly laid out format which includes 24 hour time around the inner dial and 12 hour format around the outer dial.
Automatic
Bering does not make too many automatic watches. Overall this is pretty solid value for the price. The movement is a Miyota which has been slightly modified as you can see, unusually it has the date window at the 9 o’clock position inside a small subdial. The watch isn’t cheap, but neither is it expensive. In fairness to Bering, if you were to buy an automatic watch from a different fashion brand, you would likely pay 50% more than this.
In summary, in terms of automatic watches made by fashion brands. This isn’t a bad choice, Citizen and Seiko are much better value, although you will not get a minimalist Scandinavian design from those brands.
