What constitutes a watch being made in a certain country is a very controversial subject. Whilst Switzerland has a very clear and concise definition of what a Swiss watch is, other non-watchmaking countries do not have such criteria.

To add to this confusion, brands such as MVMT were originally designed and incorporated in America, use Japanese movements, and assemble their watches in China. Not to mention, MVMT is now owned by Swiss watch manufacturer Movado. This is not an uncommon theme either. Particularly when the quartz crisis hit Switzerland, many brands went bankrupt with their intellectual property rights were sold off to foreign investors.

For the sake of this list, watch brands will be listed in the country where the brand was first created. This will resolve any disagreement, particularly when brands are being sold to larger companies so often. Secondly, various watches have movements and parts from different countries, despite being made by the same brand.

This list is not exhaustive and brands are constantly being added. Due to the growing nature of the microbrand industry, it is difficult to keep track of these companies, so they will not be included.

If you do know of a very obvious brand (or country) that has not been included, please leave a message in the comments section and it will be added.
