It is fair to say that Edox is not a luxury watch brand. At the very high end, the brand produces watches that retail at around $3000. At the other end of the scale, their watches begin at around $300. This is not typical at all of a luxury brand and is very similar to watchmakers such as Citizen, Tissot & Raymond Weil. Perhaps at the very high end of their entire range, Edox can be considered as a brand that makes entry-level luxury watches.

Edox watches are certainly good quality. They all use Swiss movements and are a legitimate, respected and established brand.

Edox watches are not simple fashion watches and shouldn’t be categorized as such. They are far superior quality to other brands in the lower end of their price range, such as Armani or Hugo Boss.

Edox Watch History

The Edox brand can be traced back to 1884 when Swiss watchmaker Christian Ruefli-Flury created a pocket watch for his wife’s 25th birthday. Soon after this watch was made, his wife liked it so much that she convinced him to create his own company.

The logo of the company is an hourglass, a common instrument to measure time. It’s no coincidence then, that the brand name “Edox” was chosen to represent the company, which roughly translates to “measure of time” in the ancient Greek language.

An all too familiar story for Swiss watchmakers was that at the peak of their popularity the quartz crisis almost wiped them out. During the 1970s and 1980s, the brand changed hands a number of times but is now owned by the family-run Era Watch Company and has been since 1983.

It wasn’t too long after this when in 1998 the company entered the world record books. Amazingly Edox were able to manufacture a watch movement with a calendar wheel that was only 1.4mm thick. Whilst thinner watches have been created, nobody has managed to make a calendar movement this thin in the 20+ years since it took place.

Are Edox Watches Expensive?

As previously mentioned, Edox watches vary in price quite drastically. This is mostly due to the different quality of movements used. At the bottom end of the range, you will have a basic ETA quartz movement. Whilst this is certainly both reliable and accurate, it is not particularly expensive or luxurious.

At the top end of the range, watches begin to cost around $3000. This could be considered expensive, but it’s industry standard for the watch you will receive.

Overall, Edox watches are not particularly expensive. If you shop around on Amazon, you should be able to find some of the more basic models for around, or perhaps even under $300 if there is a sale.

Are Edox Watches Good Value For Money?

Edox watches are good value for money, specifically their automatic watches.

Overall, Edox are a reasonably priced mid-end Swiss watch manufacturer. They make similar quality watches to other brands such as Tissot and use mostly ETA movements for both their quartz and automatic watches.

There are brand new Edox chronographs with Valjoux 7750 movements available for just under $1000. This is very good value for money as you would usually find this caliber of watch to cost more. Edox quartz watches on the other hand are not exceptional value for money, but are at least competitively priced for the brand’s reputation.

Where Are Edox Watches Made?

Edox watches are made in Les Genevez, Switzerland. This is a fairly small municipality that is around 1 hours drive from the capital city of Bern.

Like almost all other Swiss watch brands, Edox has always made its watches in Switzerland and continues to do so for the foreseeable future. Each watch that is purchased from new comes with a 2 year manufactures warranty.

The Most Iconic Edox Watches

Edox Gir Les Bemonts

The Les Bemonts day date chronograph is one of the best value-for-money watches made by Edox. It has the timeless automatic movement, the Valjoux 7750. This movement is not only reliable but also incredibly accurate.

In general, you would be expecting to pay around $1500 for a watch of this standard from a brand name such as Edox. However, at slightly under $1000, this is nothing short of a real bargain.

It has an exhibition case back, as is quite common with modern-day automatic watches. For extra peace of mind, the watch also has 100 meter water resistance and sapphire crystal to stop any unwanted scratches.

Delfin

Released just one year after the Iconic AP Royal Oak, the Edox Delfin looks strikingly similar. The only real difference between the layout of the dials is that the Delfin has a day window rather than just a date. Secondly, the screws used in the AP bezel are a lot larger than the screws used by the Delfin.

If you are after a budget version of a watch in this style then do not fear. There is a quartz version of the Delfin available which has a slightly different dial layout. Albeit much cheaper, the quartz version of the Delfin can usually be picked up for at least a 50-60% discount.

Les Vauberts

The Les Vauberts range of watches features a simplistic dial layout. In the quartz range, there is often a moonphase features slightly above the centerline of the watch. The mechanical lineup of Les Vauberts, replaces this moonphase with an open heart design.

To be honest the automatic range of Les Vauberts is pretty expensive and costs just as much as the Valjoux 7750 chronograph watches by Edox. If you thought those are overpriced, the quartz lineup of Les Vauberts is a bargain. If you shop around, you can sometimes find them for under $300. A good Swiss brand, with Swiss movement and a moonphase for this price is really outstanding.

C1 Divers

The C1 is more or less the cheapest Edox watch that you can buy. It is truly a budget divers watch, similar to quartz models produced by both Seiko and Citizen.

There is not too much else to say about it other than it offers 200m water resistance. Honestly, unless you are a big fan of the brand, you’re much better off buying a Seiko for this price.

Les Bemonts Moonphase

Edox offers a great looking moonphase watch in the Les Bemonts collection. Although the movement is quartz, the watch is reasonably priced. If you were to make this watch with an automatic movement, it would cost well over $1000, so it’s not bad for around half of that price.

It has an unusual subdial layout, using the top right-hand dial as the moonphase icon. Obviously, as the watch is quartz it’s going to be accurate, but also has decent water resistance for a fashion watch.

Grand Ocean

The Edox Grand Ocean range is a series of divers watches. Within the grand ocean range, there is a huge variety of designs, water resistance depth, features and movements. Therefore the prices will differ greatly, depending on which complications you want, or whether you’re happy with a quartz movement.

A plain quartz grand ocean with no complications will cost you around $500. Whereas if you are to add chronograph features, 300 meter water resistance and a Valjoux 7750 movement, the price will be around 6 times higher than this. Of course, there are other models within this price range with a moderate amount of complications.

If you’re looking for a reliable Swiss made divers watch that is not in the common style of a submariner, the Grand Ocean is a great choice.

Chronorally

The Edox Chronorally collection is a series of motorsport-inspired watches featuring chronographs. There is once again, a lot of variation of price and design within this series. Unusually, the collection also features a lot of left-handed watches which are inspired by old English-made watches, typically associated with the Graham brand.

Most of the Chronorally series contain quartz movements. This means that they are not as good value for money as other Edox watches. However, they do offer a good cheaper alternative choice to Graham watches and are also slightly cheaper than other racing-inspired watches such as the Tag Heuer F1.

Skydiver

Interestingly enough, although this watch is named the Skydiver, it offers 300 meters water resistance. This is the same as a Rolex submariner (which it looks like a lot), and is a lot more water resistance than some of the other Edox divers watches such as the Grand Ocean.

Much like a Rolex sub, the Skydiver is available in a variety of different bezel, dial and bracelet colors. These are all typically priced around the same amount with some minor variations. Although if you’re seeking a special edition model, this of course will cost you more.

The movement is a very reliable Calibre 80 (ETA 2824 or Sellita SW200) so this makes it good value for the price tag.

Womens LaPassion

The Edox Lapassion is visually similar to a Cartier Ballon-Bleu. With that being said, it does have a left-handed crown, which is very welcome and unusual for a woman’s watch.

The LaPassion is available in steel, gold or rose gold and has two options of movement. In the image pictured above, the automatic open heart dial is displayed. Although if you’re not a fan of automatic watches, the quartz version of the watch has a fully closed dial and is around $150-$200 cheaper.

Both the quartz and automatic versions will of course be equipped with an ETA movement. In addition to the guarantee of reliability, the dial is covered by sapphire crystal. Which is pretty much industry standard for a watch of this price point.

Hydrosub

If you can’t find the HydroSub in your local jewelers, it’s because it has been discontinued. However, there are still some pieces floating around online which are brand new. This is partly because the hydrosub is such a unique design, you probably either love it or hate it.

True to its name, the hydrosub is a legitimate divers watch with 500 meters of water resistance. However, it is not a high-end watch as it uses a standard ETA quartz movement, not an automatic.

The master lock slider is also a strange feature. It seems purely cosmetic as the screw down crown can work perfectly fine without it. In fairness, it does change up what would be an otherwise basic design.

CO-1

Based on the Sellita SW500 movement, the Edox CO-1 is not only the most garish of their designs. But is also the most expensive. The cost of this watch is actually very reasonable given its movement and other features.

The high end automatic CO-1’s have a carbon fiber case which is even more scratch-resistant than ceramic. In addition to this, they are true dive watches. The CO-1 is able to reach up to 500 meters of depth without having any problems. To put that in perspective, that is 40% more resistance than a submariner, which costs significantly more.

The CO-1 comes in 4 different colors and a budget quartz version is available for significantly cheaper if you do not want such a high spec watch.
