There are some unspoken rules about which hand you should wear your watch on. You may have seen a TV show or a music video and realized that the person you’ve seen actually has their watch on the opposite wrist to yourself.

This is nothing to worry about since wearing a watch on any wrist you like is a personal preference but does have some minor advantages and drawbacks which are explained in further detail below.

In summary, this entire topic is much ado about nothing and only true watch snobs will claim that there is a “correct” wrist to wear your watch.

Which Hand Should You Wear A Watch On?

Ultimately this is a personal choice. In theory, you should wear a watch on your non-dominant hand, so if you are right handed, you should wear your watch on your left wrist. Conversely, if you are left handed, you should wear your watch on your right wrist.

However, this mostly depends on where the crown is located on the watch. If you are wearing a standard watch with a crown on the right hand side, it is much easier to operate by wearing it on your left wrist. This is because you do not have to reach across your arm in an awkward fashion to adjust it.

This is why there are only a small amount of left handed watches. As left handed people are only around 12% of the population not too many people want a crown that is on the left hand side of the watch. With that being said, you don’t have to be left handed to wear a watch with a left sided crown, it is just a lot easier to operate one of these models if you wear a watch on your right wrist.

The example below is a watch which would best be worn on the right hand.

Less Damage & Ease Of Use

This may be clutching at straws a little, but it has the potential to offer at least a few benefits. For the sake of this example, let’s assume you are right handed. This means that you’re going to be doing a lot more things with your right hand such as writing, opening doors, picking up objects, and anything else you can think of.

It would make sense then, that as your right hand is more active, it is more likely to get knocked or scuffed since it is doing a lot more activities than your left hand.

Not only this, but if you want to see the time whilst performing a task such as writing, it is likely that your dominant hand is occupied. Your resting hand is often not doing anything at all, so it makes logical sense to wear your watch on your free wrist.

Which Hand Should You Wear Your Apple Watch On?

Due to the great technical design of Apple watches, you can wear them on either your left or right wrist. Apple smart watches are truly reversible and can be flipped around very easily. This is very different from regular watches and smartwatches which are all designed with a regular fixed crown. Obviously, Apple is well known for their innovative and personalized product design, so this should come as no surprise to fans of the brand.

Does It Matter Which Hand You Wear Your Watch On?

No. There is no hidden message or meaning behind which wrist you decide to wear your watch on. As previously discussed, most people are right handed, so wear watches on their left wrists. This is just a time honored tradition and is logically sound. For the same reason we write from left to right, so we don’t smudge the ink on our pages, if most people in society were left handed, there is a good chance these traditions would be reversed.

In summary, you should just wear whatever you are comfortable with. Even if this means wearing your watch on the “wrong” side. If somebody cares enough about which wrist you wear your watch on, they probably are a deeply troubled individual.
